Involved with his community, Jay Zises supports nonprofit environmental organizations such as The Nature Conservancy. One area of current concern for the Rhode Island chapters of both The Nature Conservancy and The Audubon Society is a proposal to create a natural gas power plant within the George Washington Wildlife Management Area. Spanning approximately 12,000 acres in western Rhode Island and Massachusetts, the area represents the last remaining wildlife corridor of its size on the Eastern Seaboard. A particular impact of the proposed Clear River Energy Center, which would lie on 35 acres of land, would be increased light pollution in the region. This could have an adverse effect both on bird migrations, as some species use the stars to navigate, and in insect food gathering and mating patterns. Artificial lighting at night can severely disrupt the patterns of insects that form the basic building blocks of complex ecosystems. For larger species, the proposed power plant would present a physical barrier that would make movement and migration more difficult.
